Fold the short sides of an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of white card stock together. If you want to make the best 1st birthday Baby Einstein birthday cake, you cannot go wrong with a Caterpillar cake. Here are two excellent Caterpillar cake recipe ideas.

Baby Einstein Character Cake

You can purchase a Baby Einstein character cake pan, these novelty cake pans come with complete decorating instructions. That way, even you can make a professional looking cake from home. Here are three cake pans that will go perfectly with any Baby Einstein party theme.

If you plan on purchasing your cake from a bakery you should consider these Baby Einstein cake toppers with this Baby Einstein candle.

Baby Caterpillar Cake

Start by taking a box of cake mix (If you use a white cake mix you can dye it green to seem more life like) and bake it according to directions in a bundt cake pan. Take any white icing and separate it evenly into 5 bowls and add dye to each one. (Yellow, Blue, Purple, Red, and Green) When cake has cooled cut it evenly in half and place on tray in a "S" shape. (This will be the shape of your caterpillar.)

Now apply the icing in sections start the head of the caterpillar in yellow, then a blue section, purple, red, and finally green. (If you make a longer caterpillar cake or want to make smaller sections just repeat the color pattern described above). Take Twizzler Pull N Peels and peel them into individual strings, and place them in between the different colored sections of icing.

You can use mini marshmallows, brown M&M's, or gum drops for the eyes. For the mouth, you can take a gumdrop place it in between two pieces of wax paper and flatten it out with a rolling pin or use a Fruit Roll Up. The antennas can be licorice, chocolate covered pretzel sticks, or even spiral candles. Finally, you can use licorice, Fruit Roll Ups, or candy corns for the legs.

If you need more cake than the caterpillar cake can supply for the party, you can make a rectangle shaped cake that is at least twice the diameter of the bundt cake pan and 3 inches wider. When it cools down, use one of the following grass icing techniques to make the entire cake look like a patch of grass. (Use chocolate cake mix to make it look like the dirt under the grass.)

You can take any white icing and dye it green, and then you can either use a icing decorating bag with a grass tip or take the white icing and mix it with shredded coconut then dye it green. (It is important to add the coconut before the dye, so all of the coconut is dyed green) Then you can carefully place the caterpillar on the "grass".

Baby Einstein Caterpillar Cupcakes

Make at least one dozen large cupcakes, cook in non-stick cupcake pan without cupcake liners. (Liners tend to damage cupcake when removed) Take any white icing and evenly separate it into 5 bowls and add each color of dye to each one. (Yellow, Blue, Purple, Red, and Green) Now apply the icing to the cupcakes in this order yellow, blue, purple, red, and green repeat pattern as many times necessary until all cupcakes are done.

The first yellow cupcake is the head you can use gumdrops or marshmallows for the eyes, licorice or Fruit Roll Up for the mouth, and candles or licorice and be used for the antennas. The legs are easy to do to just take two chocolate covered pretzel sticks, stick gumdrops into the ends of them, and insert them into the cupcakes.
